The SMR (Small Modular Reactor) is set to go online in 2029 in North America and Europe (2026 on Hainan Island, China).  Bill Gates is building his in Wyoming, and Oregon's NuScale is building one in Idaho right now.  They use a more enriched fuel, so the waste is even worse than before. They say, "less waste" but that's because they're small.  If you need the equivalent megawatt capacity of a current behemoth nuke, you just order more than one and hook em together in sequence like batteries.  They take a year to build in a factory and a year to deploy at the site, which can be any place reachable by a shipping container.  New roads now being built through the Amazon and the new Arctic drilling should give a clue to the wide application of these poison machines.  (Also note the sudden prospect of a lithium boom in Catamarca and Salta provinces, Argentina, where a new constitution, not voted on by the people, is criminalizing dissent and restricting indigenous people.) And the poison will not be removed from the Amazon, the Arctic, the Andes, or perhaps the Willamette Valley.  After the money is made from a factory or mine or wellhead, no corporation is gonna waste money on cleanup. The nuclear industry has crowed that it intends to have "thousands" deployed by mid-century, all over the world, an eternal legacy for our descendants: cancer and mutations galore.
