From kathy at kathyging.com Mon May 4 22:50:58 2015 From: kathy at kathyging.com (Kathy Ging) Date: Mon, 4 May 2015 20:50:58 -0700 Subject: [Permatopia] Time sensitive: Crossfire cell tower: Friends of Amazon Creek: write letters by May 8; public hearing-testify May 27 Message-ID: FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION - letters optimally by Friday, May 8; testify at public hearing May 27. NOW is the time to EXPRESS YOUR OPINION OPPOSING THE PROPOSED CELL TOWER at 4060 W. Amazon that will be an eyesore and more in the heart of a South Eugene neighborhood across from our protected wildlife corridor and bird flyway! (and please make a tax-exempt donation if possible to costs). Recently in the news is a controversial proposal to build a cell tower at 4060 West Amazon at Fox Hollow, on the grounds of Crossfire Church in the heart of a South Eugene residential neighborhood (setting a BAD PRECEDENT allowing towers in residential neighborhoods!) and located across the street from Parker Elementary School - closer than the 1,500 ft. that many think should be the minimum feet from schools. Further, the Amazon corridor is a protected area, a bird flyway and 2.8 million dollars has been spent of public and private funds to protect it. Also, documentation exists about how proximity to cell towers can lower property values and result in lower rents. PLEASE WRITE A LETTER OPPOSING THE PROJECT - for guidelines visit Friends of Amazon Creek site - even if you do not live near the area, your letters are needed and if possible a money donation which is tax exempt: Also sign the online petition. Project opponents' web page with recommendations on testifying - see guidelines under WRITTEN TESTIMONY - and where to submit comments to Eugene Planning staff: http://friendsofamazoncreek.org/takeaction/ For background information, visit http://friendsofamazoncreek.org/ Several neighborhoods in Eugene have seen proposals for cell tower construction, often with limited opportunities to challenge unwise aspects of the project or the whole siting itself. However, the Crossfire proposal has sparked great public interest and this degree of citizen involvement may help put the brakes on excessive or unnecessary projects in the future. The cell-phone industry is a growing, highly competitive field and service providers are interested in having the most coverage for the transmissions carried on their own network. Cell phone towers are built by privately owned networks that compete with others. Crossfire has been offered 1.5-2 million dollars over the next 25 years to site the tower there! Co-location of antennae is far preferred to siting a new base station in a residential area! Once a tower is approve, no public hearings are necessary to add many more antennae. A Wall Street Journal article reports that at least 10% of cell towers emit microwaves beyond those allowed by FCC standards! Agree or disagree, federal law prohibits legal objections to cell phone towers over concerns about health effects of these manmade microwave transmissions. This applies to the local land use process that will either permit or deny the Crossfire cell tower project. Opponents of the project are raising permissible objections--aesthetics and the environmental impact on wildlife in the Amazon Creek corridor. Pls. do the same. The latter pertains to the effect of the transmissions on birds, bees and insects that are part of this park corridor that surrounds the creek, a corridor that extends into the Amazon Neighborhood proper. A City of Eugene hearing on the Conditional Use Permit for Crossfire's tower is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27, at Harris Hall, 5:30 to 7:30 pm. For those of you that feel testimony at a hearing is often too late to make a difference, please note that the City of Eugene's Planning Department is preparing its staff report and recommendations that will be presented at the hearing. They welcome public input: Friday May 8th is identified as the date letters to the Planning Department will be fully considered in making that report. But you can still submit letters after May 8; if speaking at the 5.27.15 hearing, pls. also have a written copy of your remarks to save staff time transcribing. Message-ID: <0CE810A1-96C8-49DD-846C-D0BB8286A5AF@kathyging.com> Tsunami Books Crowdfunding Campaign needs our support! Important Update, and Call to Support Tsunami Books' Indiegogo Crowdfunding Campaign Help Save and Sustain Tsunami Books Community Venue: Please share this widely. The time has come to be completely honest about this Campaign, which, alas, much like 10 years ago, is a campaign to Save Tsunami Books. https://www.indiegogo.com/?/help-sustain-tsunami-books-comm? First off, thank you very much to the 107 folks who have contributed over $4900. to the Campaign so far. The site itself has received 1700 visits, including over 300 from other countries. At the moment we're putting a lot of energy into reaching out to Bookstore Lovers everywhere. Question: Will Tsunami Books survive if it does not raise (at least) close to its stated goal (of $40,000.)? Looking very carefully at the situation, I don't see how Tsunami can keep going without your help. Which is to say, as soon as we accepted our first dollar through Crowdfunding, we committed to signing a new two-year lease by July 1, but may not be able to honor it. Most bookstore owners are cavalier by nature--how could one be anything but a reeling optimist when surrounded by books and all the amazing different people who pass through-- but the truth is Tsunami really does need to at least come close to hitting our goal to live beyond the next few months or year. A lot of issues to deal with, several of which I'll list here: 1) The sale of the building soon to occur for a sum that will necessitate a significant increase in rent; 2) The fact that many of our events do not come close to paying for themselves (for instance, the many, many meetings and fundraisers we hosted for Saving Civic and the Amazon Creek Headwaters, all for no charge, or last night's phenomenal Reading of Hershell Norwood's new play "Fell the Tallest Tree," which packed the house but did not cover the costs; 3) The need for upgrades to our venue side to increase income potential, and just general safety; 4) We are experiencing a turnover of help, and it takes a lot of time and money to train new staff; 5) The short-term uncertainty of business on South Willamette beginning this August, when the street will be remade to change traffic patterns; 6) Scott, at 61, am fortunately in excellent health, but far too often experiencing the Catch-22 of a weariness that comes from working 75 hours every single week, yet cannot afford to leave the place, mostly due to the daily need to juggle finances; 7) Also of real importance is the fact that fresh capital is needed to re-invigorate our book sales, which remain flat. ~-~ ~-~ ~-~ ~-~ ~-~ ~- Kathy Ging, M.A., G.R.I. 541-342-8461 Email: kathy at kathyging.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Drawing inspiration from the music of David Grisman, B?la Fleck, Tim O?Brien, Darol Anger, Jerry Douglas and many other luminary new-acousticians, Grisman, Leslie, Hargreaves and Smith have forged a sound that has elements of Oldtime, Jazz, Funk, Free-Improvisation, and Bluegrass with an energy that is entirely their own. George (deceased), formerly of Eugene, as well as Portland, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, and La Paz, was a surrealist with a vast, playfully serious spirit in the universe of poetry. His is an art of carnivals, parades, and big brass instruments with top-hatted showmanship lit up on the page. His wild, vaudevillian style is saturated with a pure joy for words, but always with a reverence for meaning. The Wounded Alphabet collects over five decades of writing and contains twelve early collages that illustrate his ongoing painterly obsession with the juxtaposition of images. George was always a favorite contributor to the poetry world at Tsunami Books. This grand event is in conjunction with a major showing of his paintings at the White Lotus Gallery (http://www.wlotus.com/ ) In Eugene on Saturday, June 13. Light refreshment. Folks, in years gone by, this Series, hosted for years by Poet Charles Thielman, was one of the local and regional mainstays for our Poetry, Prose and Fiction Writers. When Charles and Gail left the area, various experiments with a Third Saturday Series ensued. As none had the continuity Charles brought to the Tsunami stage, the series came to an end. And now, with the help of Laura LeHew and friends, comes its redux. Synchronicity at play (as it often is at Tsunami), Charles Thielman will be the first Featured Reader. An Open Mic, Original Work Forum, will be a new, experimental facet of this series. Light refreshments. Stay tuned for details. (tix $5-infinity at the door) Sunday, June 21, 4-6 PM: Reading, Discussion and Book-Signing by Frank Romano (originally from Eugene), author of ?Love and Terror in the Middle East,? 4th Edition. Frank?s book dramatically captures the author's efforts to promote understanding and cooperation in the region between Jews, Muslims and Christians. It details Romano's arduous journeys between Israel and the West Bank, discussing issues and organizing activities among religious and national groups. Traveling between these areas has been risky: he has been harassed/arrested by the Palestinian police, harassed/arrested by Israeli soldiers and attacked by Israeli settlers. A peace activist friend was recently murdered in the West Bank. This Fourth Edition includes a new chapter, Chapter 82: "In the Midst of a Riot." It recounts a recent harrowing experience in Jenin, West Bank, when he was trapped in a riot following the killing of a Palestinian youth by Israeli soldiers. Books for sale at $18.00. Light refreshments. (free) Wednesday, June 24, 3-5 PM: Discussion and book-signing by Dr Guy McPherson, author of ?Going Dark.? Going Dark is the story of one scientist's response to the horrors we face. It is a deeply personal narrative infused with abundant evidence to support its terrifying claims. In the words of syndicated cartoonist David Fitzsimmons, McPherson's ""approach is disarming and his message is both life-changing and convincingly alarming. A blend of Paul Revere with Rachel Carson, Guy McPherson is a significant voice of rational conscience nudging in the wilderness. The signing precedes his 7 PM evening talk at the Unitarian Universalist Church. Saturday, June 27, 5-7 PM: Reading and Chapbook Release Celebration by the Red Sofa Poets. Poets include: Janet Bernstein, Kelly Eastlund, Michael Hanner, Toni Hanner, Shelly Krehbiel, Joy McDowell, Keli Osborn, Sam Roxa-Chua, Amedee Smith and Sherry Wellborn. Sunday, June 28, 4-6 PM: Book Release Celebration for Carl Falsgraf (Eugene), author of the travel memoir ?Highway Blues.? Carl Falsgraf was successful, respected, and well-paid in a job he loved. Then he turned fifty-five, left it all and hit the road in a 1999 Toyota pickup. Forty-nine days meandering America?s backroads led to adventures, an intriguing cast of characters, and, ultimately, a profound sense of peace. This quintessentially American tale of loss and discovery takes the reader along on the journey of a lifetime. Joining Carl for a musical interlude will be Walker T Ryan. Light refreshments. Tuesday, June 30, 7 PM: Lecture and Signing by Martin Prechtel, author of the new book ?The Smell of Rain on Dust: Grief and Praise? (North Atlantic Books). Martin, a Mayan Shaman, is the author of five previous books about the indigenous soul in all people. About this book, Coleman Barks says: ?"MartIn Prechtel's genius takes many forms: painting, music, a continuously evolving learning community, and thank God, "books "like this one. I get so excited reading it, I cannot stay in one place. I sit reading on my porch...then back to my living room to make a fire and watch MartIn's gorgeously alive prose burn inside me. His ideas and language are so enlivening, my impulse is to quote great sections of it. I'll just touch on a few of his brilliant insights around how animals help us to grieve, and to make our way out of grief into the beauty of praising. As he says, animals help us grieve our loss of naturalness. And we have mostly forgotten 'the very old worldwide tribal custom of having a "grief relative" from the wild living together with us in our houses.' Caring for animals is a sacred responsibility. To truly grieve and to weep deeply is something the animals really do help us with. And O they help us praise too, to accomplish that most marvelous art of turning the grief into praising. MartIn tells us, 'Let the world jump up and live again, ' and he makes that happen with his delicious sentences. Read this necessary, very beautiful book, and then read it again." Martin has brought us together at Tsunami many times over the years. Expect a full house. Books for sale ($15.25); donations accepted to help with Martin and family?s travel expenses.
